Lollapalooza Paris: Unmissable Destination!

4 min read

Who has never heard of the world's largest traveling music festival 🎶 known as Lollapalooza? After a stopover in Argentina, the international event will be back in Paris this summer at the Longchamp Hippodrome 🏇. This is great news for fans in France who are eagerly waiting for Lolla's 4th edition in the capital. The first three Parisian editions were a real success with legendary artists such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Weekend, The Strokes, Twenty-One Pilots, and even Bad Bunny.

This year's Lollapalooza Paris festival is a big hit with the long-awaited return of Pearl Jam, the Young Billie Eilish, Khalid, Vald, ASAP, and Rocky as the headliners just enough to delight numerous festival-goers. While waiting for this amazing event, discover the festival's origins from its beginning to date, the practical information, and the 2020 program 🎉.

The origin of the Lollapalooza festival

Originally from the United States, this festival has a underground origin established in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, and Germany before taking its roots to France. It quickly became a reference all over the world. The festival has traveled to numerous capitals including, Chicago, Santiago, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Berlin, Paris, and Stockholm.

An itinerant alternative festival

Perry Farrell, an artist in a group popularly known as Jane's Addiction, founded Lollapalooza in 1991 during a farewell tour meant to be festive. The name refers to the swirling, multicolored lollipops 🍭 sold in America, which perfectly fits the event’s extravagant image.

With its background, the famous festival of the 90s became a real springboard and a source of inspiration for alternative music such as independent rock 🎸, funk, or hip-hop. At the dawn of the biggest musical genre of all time, the Lolla exploded on the scene in 1992 with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, two legendary grunge bands from Seattle, which revolutionized the festival with one of their best live concerts in history.

A festival that will change you

Through welcoming raging artists like Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, The Hole, Snoop Dog, Radiohead 🎤, the Lollapalooza festival has become more popular over the years. Even Nirvana was expected at the 1994 edition, but the sudden death of Kurt Cobain canceled their production. Year after year, the world event featured outstanding performances and memorable protests. The group Rage Against the Machine will be remembered for their live stage performance, protesting against the censorship of the Parents' Music Resource Center.

However, the Lolla is criticized for choosing overly popular artists against its background that defined it initially. In 1996, alternative music fans criticized Metallica, a group with a commercial reputation. They accused them of undermining the very essence of the festival.

However, the edition was still remembered with Soundgarden, The Ramones, and Emblematic Figures of Punk, as the headliners.

With a triumphant return in 2005, in partnership with C3 Presents, the Lollapalooza was a real success in Chicago with legendary bands such as Pixies, Spoon, Liz Phair, and Weezer. If the festival has lost some of its DNA, it remains one of the most famous traveling festivals awaited by fans worldwide.

A worldwide reputation

Since its creation, the international festival, now owned by Live Nation, has been established in 7 countries, in America and Europe.

From the United States 🇺🇸, the Lolla was taken to Chile 🇨🇱 in 2011 and Brazil 🇧🇷 in 2012, then to Argentina 🇦🇷 in Buenos Aires before setting it up in Germany 🇩🇪, France🇫🇷, and Sweden 🇸🇪 in the following years. The Lollapalooza festival is quickly becoming a must-see event, bringing fans together from all over the world to see the artists and live an extraordinary experience.
